What is low libido?

Low libido is a term used to describe a decreased interest in sexual activity. It is not unusual to lose interest in sex from time to time, as libido levels vary throughout life. In fact, studies have shown that one out of five men actually have libido problems. Almost 30% of women interviewed say they have more interest in sex than their partner has.

The old excuse “Not tonight dear” is not only heard by men. Research has indicated that women are more often hearing this excuse from men struggling with low libido. Like many other human functions, the sex drive intensity will also vary. This is perfectly normal if it is only for a short period of time.

However, if a low libido problem rears its head and persists for a long period of time, it may be a cause for some concern. Low libido can sometimes indicate an underlying, undiagnosed medical problem. Just to make sure that there are no medical issues, make an appointment to see your doctor for a full examination.

The silent despair of low libido

A low libido problem does not in any way detract from your manhood. Most men are in the normal range of libido, while others display almost addiction-like sexual behaviour. However, there are men who may have a chronically low interest in sex. This type of low libido problem is known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). It is usually diagnosed by a medical practitioner.

HSDD is best described as a deep-rooted low libido problem. It is characterized by the absence of sexual fantasies, sexual thoughts, and no desire for sexual activity. This may be caused by depression or anxiety, and possible physical problems such as hormone imbalances.

The lack of desire to engage in sexual activity results in severe distress. It can affect both partners on an emotional level.

Because men are by nature virile, sexual beings, the inability to perform in the bedroom is something of a body blow to a man’s image of himself. For this reason, a man with low libido problems, may duck and dive, and make excuses for the problem.

Only when his relationship or marriage begins to break down, a man who has played the hiding game, may decide to bring it out into the open and seek help for the low libido problem.

How can low libido in men be treated?

How low libido is treated depends largely on what the underlying issue might be. It may be that medications could be at the root of the problem. If so you will need to switch to something without that particular side effect. If your low libido has possible psychological causes, seeing a therapist would be a good idea.

Encouraging news is that research has uncovered some natural treatments that may help to provide relief. A solution to the low sex drive problem. Although low libido is common in men (1 in 5) except for hormonal treatment in the case of low testosterone levels, there are actually no approved drugs that will help the problem.

If there are no underlying health reasons, there are steps you can take to boost your libido naturally on your own. The following actions have the potential to increase your libido.

Note that Viagra will not help a low libido problem. Viagra is only good for those who are interested in having sex, but have difficulty getting and maintaining an erection.

Lose weight if you are obese. Obesity can lower testosterone levels, which in turn lowers libido. The other health problems associated with overweight such as heart disease and high blood pressure, are also known to have a negative effect on libido.

Cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Exercise on a regular basis and get enough sleep. A lack of exercise and poor sleep have a harmful impact on the entire system, which can also effect libido.

Reduce alcohol intake. Alcohol is not an aphrodisiac – it is a depressant. After drinking, it causes the body systems to slow down, and prolonged drinking drastically reduces sexual responses.

Eating a healthy diet, especially foods such leafy green vegetables, eggs, tuna, oysters and garlic, which are all known to increase testosterone levels, will give your libido a boost. Studies have further revealed that asparagus which contains folic acid, potassium and vitamin E, is a proven aphrodisiac!
Supplements such as vitamin D are also important in the treatment of low libido.
Natural products, like specially formulated herbal compounds, which are readily available without a doctor’s prescription, are of tremendous benefit to enhancing libido.

Low libido is not a reflection of your manhood.
