Tight clothing may be affecting vaginal health

When you get up in the morning, there are usually a myriad of things about the day ahead running through your mind. As you get dressed maybe pulling on a pair of super-skinny jeans, the last thing you are probably thinking about is your health. The tight jeans may look good from the back, but it’s in the front where they could be doing harm.

Studies have shown that tight clothing and underwear has the potential to have a negative impact on certain areas of the body, causing a range of problems.

Research has indicated that tight pants, especially jeans, is the main problem which can cause issues like bacterial vaginitis, yeast infections, and even urinary tract infections. These irritations are not life threatening, but can become dangerous if not properly treated.

Visit your doctor if you have repeated episodes of inflammation, pain, and infections in the vaginal area, to ensure that there is nothing sinister lurking about.

Not the only problem

While tight pants might be a major problem, there may be other items in your closet which can add to the health hazards of tight clothes in general.

Here are 10 of them:

  • Skinny jeans can compress nerves in the groin and legs, reducing blood flow to the lower legs. The pinched nerves may cause swelling and muscle damage as well.
  • The fabric of tight clothing rubs against the skin disrupting the barrier that protects you from inflammation and infections.
  • Tight clothes make you perspire more, creating an environment for fungal infections and heat rashes.
  • Clothing is not designed to give you a shape you do not have. Squeezing into too-tight shapewear can squash your organs, giving rise to stomach pain and acid reflux.
  • The dye used in coloured underwear may irritate the delicate skin around the vagina, especially if you already have sensitive skin or are prone to vaginal infections. White cotton (not as glamourous) instead of brightly coloured synthetic, is always the best bet.
  • Wearing tight pants when going out to eat puts pressure on the abdomen leading to abdominal discomfort, indigestion, heartburn, and belching. This is a very common problem also known as tight pants syndrome.
  • Swimming costumes are usually made of synthetic fabric which stays moist and warm and is a great place for yeast and bacteria to flourish. Dry off in the sun, or if you have finished swimming, change into dry clothes.
  • Thongs, especially any that are ill-fitting, can easily transfer bacteria from the rectum to the vagina. If you are prone to infections, then wearing a thong is definitely not for you.
  • Leggings are mostly made from a stretch synthetic material. They cling to the body and pick up sweat and oil which stays in the fabric until it is washed. Make certain that your leggings are regularly laundered, especially if you have been to the gym, or you could land up with a fungal infection like ringworm, rashes, or scaly skin patches.
  • Sweatbands soak up sweat when you are exercising, but also collect bacteria which remains in the fabric even when dry. The bacteria can cause a pimply breakout on the face, so wash the band thoroughly after use.

Check your closet to see which items need special care such as frequent washing, to avoid problems such as vaginal infections, skin rashes, and fungal issues. Or better still, try and modify your wardrobe with clothing which is less constricting and healthier to wear.
