More common than you think

Erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to get or keep an erection, is far more common than you think. Many men may experience difficulty at some time during life, but when it is ongoing, it is liable to cause problems in relationships, and major self-confidence issues.

Because men believe that ED impacts directly on their manhood, it is not an easy subject for them to talk about. This has led to many misconceptions and myths regarding ED which still exist, even in our modern, enlightened day.

Here are some of the more well-known myths about erectile dysfunction:

  • Myth. The negative impact of ED is only felt by men.
Fact. ED affects both a man and his partner. Intimate and close relationships often suffer if the problem is not seen to. A man can develop feelings of inadequacy, and low self-esteem. His partner could begin to feel it is somehow her fault, which may result in relationship problems.
  • Myth. Tight underwear damages the genitals and causes ED.
Fact. There is no medical research which associates tight underwear with ED. However, there is a possible link between tight underwear, and fertility problems, as it can increase the temperature of the testicles, which has a bad effect on sperm production.
  • Myth. ED is a normal part of the aging process.
Fact. ED is more common in older men, but it can occur in men of any age. Erectile dysfunction is not necessarily a part of aging. As men age, the risk of illnesses like diabetes, and high blood pressure, is increased, and these diseases can have a negative impact on sexuality, even in younger men. ED needs to be treated whether you are 30 or 60!
  • Myth. Relationship problems cause ED.
Fact. Relationship problems can lead to both a man and a woman lacking sexual desire when emotions run high. A lack of desire for sex is not the same as ED, which is more a physical problem than a psychological one.
  • Myth. Viagra and other similar medications, is the only treatment for ED.
Fact. Medications do not work for everyone, but it is best to visit the doctor to find out if there is an undiagnosed medical issue which may be causing the problem. While some men may benefit from oral medications, lifestyle changes can be a better option. A healthy diet, losing weight, cutting down on alcohol, and quitting smoking can work wonders for your sexuality.
  • Myth. Having trouble getting an erection always means ED.
Fact. There is a popular belief that men can have sex at any time. This is nonsense. As with women, there are some days when a man is just not in the mood for sex. There may be issues like fatigue, a difficult day at work, personal problems, or worry, which has just taken his focus off sex for a while. This is by no means ED.
  • Myth. ED is just a personal problem and is not dangerous.
Fact. ED itself is not dangerous in the true sense of the word. However, if it is ongoing with no sign of improvement, no matter what measures you employ, it could be a sign that all is not well with your health. Visiting your doctor if you experience ongoing ED may help identifying and treating serious medical conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.

Facts not fiction

Understanding what ED is all about, will help you to sort out the facts from fiction. ED does not signify the end of your sex life, no matter what your age. Most ED problems are physical, and the key to successfully restoring your sexuality, is to take positive action to deal with the issues.
