What is impulsive behavior?

Impulsive behavior, or impulsivity, is the tendency to act or speak without thinking. For example, blurt out something you did not mean to say, or run across a street without looking for traffic. Up to a point, this kind of behavior is more common in children or teenagers. But this is not necessarily a sign of trouble. It is human nature to say or do something you wish you hadn’t – we are all guilty of that at times. However, some people are often impulsive, perhaps several times a day, which can lead to problems and often deep regret. If you notice a regular pattern of some of the following behaviors, you could have a problem with impulsivity.

  • Aggressive behavior
  • Restlessness.
  • Easily distracted from what you might be doing

Research has shown that chronic impulsive behavior can be a symptom of several conditions, and has not been diagnosed as a condition on its own.

Some conditions linked to impulsivity:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD shows links to impulsivity when people shout out answers to questions, or have trouble waiting in a line waiting for their turn to come.
  • Bipolar disorder which affects the mood, and energy levels. Impulsivity can show up in behaviors like overspending habits on unneeded items, or alcohol and substance abuse.

Uncontrolled anxiety, always waiting for the worst to happen, also results in impulsive actions such as seeing danger everywhere when none exists.

Impulsive sexual behavior

This condition is also known as compulsive sexual behavior, and is sometimes called hypersexuality. It manifests as an intense focus on sexual urges and behaviors which are almost impossible to control. These impulses can cause distress and problems for your health, job, relationships, as well as other parts of your life. Impulsivity may be triggered by communication of a sexual nature with someone on a computer, fantasies originating in your mind, and multiple casual sexual partners – with little concern given to using protection. Some sexual encounters may indeed be pleasurable, but if it becomes the primary focus in your life, it will definitely cause problems in your life.

Here are some signs that you may have impulsive sexual behavior:

  • Repeated intense sexual fantasies, urges and behaviors that take up a lot of your time.
  • Have tried, but are unable to control these behaviors.
  • You may use compulsive sexual behavior to escape other issues such as loneliness, anxiety or stress.

This condition can happen in both men and women, but studies have indicated that it is more
common in men.

Getting help

Getting help for impulsive sexual behavior can be difficult. It is a deeply personal matter and you may even be embarrassed to speak to the doctor. The doctor may suggest that you consult a therapist to make sure there are no unresolved trauma issues lurking in your mind, triggering these impulsive sexual behaviors. The doc will also make sure that there are no physical problems to consider.
